If [as a writer] you are going to stand for clearness at any price, then you are going to shut yourself out from a good many things. For a good many things cannot be put quite clearly except by being put falsely. If everything in every shadowy corner of a Rembrandt interior were painted so that you could tell just what it was, what would become of the picture, its beauty and truth?
